In this large scale work, Tāne Mahuta, God of the Great Forests, Birds, and Insects is depicted in his momentous push between his parents as the other atua (deities) show varying expressions of excitement and horror. In the bottom right corner, Te Pō (The Long Night) withdraws as Te Ao Mārama (The World of Light) reaches across the painting at Tānes feet. On Tānes pūhoro (lower body tattoo) is Te Kore (untapped potential), showing the way potential comes from strength. As the Tino Rangatiratanga colours embellish the entire painting, Tāne’s tinana is marked with various toi patterns from whakairo, tā moko and raranga. He is moving from one form to another through rigorous and strenuous effort.
