TANGAROA SAID TAKE DEEP BREATH
In an explosive collage, this painting depicts Tangaroa, God of the Oceans, wearing a necklace. The black and white figures that surround him are petroglyphs from Taputapuatea- the Hawaiki of Ngāpuhi, where the artist’s tribe left from in their migration to Aotearoa. Drawing a connection to this tapu whenua (sacred land), the depicted petroglyph shows various figures floating and swimming to give Tangaroa his ornament. This work was an intuitive maelstrom to connect the artistic tradition of the Ngāpuhi journey into a contemporary piece of work. This is shown through various whakairo patterns and lines to bring both elements into a cohesive image.
