TE REINGA THE GLUTTON
Before the Pākeha came to Aotearoa, money didn’t exist, but economics did. Much of Māori exchange in traditional times happened through a clever strategy of calculated gifting. Essentially, by gift giving, one was able to salvage their autonomy, at any point in time, by requesting something of equivalent or greater worth. However, this also became a dangerous strategy, as taking advantage of another’s generosity would likely lead to an unfortunate demise. One individual in particular did just this, Te Reinga the Notorious Glutton. Te Reinga became fond of wandering up and down the beach asking fishermen for the best portion of their catch. As custom, the fishermen would do just that. But they eventually became sick and tired of him, and so they sent a war party off to kill Te Reinga.
