Rendered in quick execution, and a typical theme of noa’s work, this rangatira (nobleman) holds a piercing gaze. Shadowed skin is held together by bold strokes of red and blue, which is accompanied with illuminating white. These three colours converge to present the mana (spiritual authority) of his mataora (facial tattoo). A complex arrangement of traditional whakairo (wood carving) and tāmoko (tattoo) patterns show intricate parts of the face. But most of all is the pukupuku pātea which covers the body, bringing a third traditional art form, raranga (weaving) where a culmination of traditional Māori art illustrates this figure. In a stream of consciousness, noa defies symmetry lending the painting a chaotic aspect. This aims to present the historical context in which Māori rangatira led lives in pursuit of an endless cycle of rebalance against revenge and reciprocity.
