'Progress' is inspired by changing urban and suburban landscapes. The painting is based on the artist's neighbourhood in hometown Brisbane, where rapid development of the inner-city has recently reached leafy city-fringe suburbs like Toowong. A favourite of university students, an old pub 'The Royal Exchange' (known as 'the RE') is now hemmed in by cheaply built high density apartments, the residents of which complain about the liveliness of the student pub and threaten its continued operations. With so much of Brisbane's built heritage erased during the 1980's and replaced by low-integrity new-builds, the prospect of losing what little character still exists in Brisbane is indeed a sad one.
