THIEVES is in reference to the effects of the current right wing, three party, government recently elected in Aotearoa who are committed to stripping Tangata Whenua (People of the land) of our mana (authority). The three hands represent the three party leaders, who are picking and pulling at the face of a hei tiki. Acts such as the removal of language, questioning treaty principles, and insulting the efforts of our ancestors. Ironically, aspects of culture which aren’t picked and pulled are ones which benefit the ‘New Zealand’ economy. THIEVES is an attempt to bring wider attention to the way our global political climate walks a thin line towards fascism, pushes doublespeak, and is ultimately set to extract labour and capital from the bottom, to funnel it to the top.
