The tohunga is the most important person of the tribe, a conduit of priestly knowledge, power, and wisdom. Communicating every inch of their personal tapu (sacredness) they touched, the value of the tohunga cannot be overestimated. Surrounded by pulsating waves of mana (authority) and tapu, he guides it around his tinana (body) as he communes with the atua (deities). Their gentle, relaxed, and meditative state speaks; white lines depict the rhythm of the manawa (heartbeat) as a vehicle for communion.
